chicago to be with the president. >> mitt romney voted in his home state of massachusetts and travel to cleveland and pittsburgh for rallies. and wrap things up for new hampshire. paul ryan votes this morning and make campaign stops in cleveland. both men will watch election results from boston. that is where we find tara wall. she joins us live this morning. good to see you this morning. >> good morning. thanks for having me. >> we want to know what that mood is like in these final hours now. really now that it's up to the voters. what's it like on the inside of governor romney's campaign? >> pretty exciting and as you can see behind me , a lot of busyness going on. we have a great operation behind us in

addition to the ground game we've had in virginia. a lot of folks on the ground getting out to vote. we had just over 600,000 over this weekend alone. 5.5 million contacts overall. behind me is project orca going on. we can communicate with people on the ground and get real time information about polling. there's a lot of momentum. a lot of enthusiasm and we're excited as we watch like everyone as. the candidates are out for one more last round of campaigning. so we'll be excited to come back and enjoy a victory this evening. >> in speaking with robert gibs from the obama campaign, we know the president is doing a couple interviews today but then he will watch the results come in with his family. governor romney on the other hand is in those battleground states this

morning. pennsylvania, ohio. what's the message today on this final day? >> well, the message is first of all voters do have a choice and this past four years, it's been an indication we can't afford four more years. we need real recovery. and real change. we need somebody that has real leadership. big vision that will bring this country together. but also kick start this economy. we've had a community organizer. time for a business leader. someone who knows how to turn around economies and restored economies and brought down unemployment. who has grown jobs. who has brought down passes. this is the type of message the romney/ryan ticket brings as opposed to the last four years. credit for what he tried to do but frankly failed.

1 and 6 people in poverty. that's unacceptable for most americans. and so we believe under the romney/ryan plan that this country will get back on its feet. see more job growth. job creation. 12 million is what we're protecting. and americans will agree come tonight. this election night. >> here on a lighter note, any election day traditions the governor is sticking to that you know of today? >> i think you can expect much of what he's done even going into the debates and spending time with family in a light hearted way and all these millions of supporters and volunteers and people that have helped put this campaign together, we're excited to celebrate this evening. that's what you can expect from the governor and congressman ryan. >> all right tara wall, senior

voters started heading to the polls two hours ago. there are several questions that are expected to bring out a record number of voters. holly morris is live in largo with more on that. >> reporter: good morning to you, tony. we are seeing those record numbers here this morning. a steady stream at this church since about 5:30 this morning. and a lot of people that are coming out to work the crowd. governor martin omally is joining me. i know you guys were talking to voters. what was your last minute push and what kind of feedback were you get sng. >> thanking people for coming out today and so excited to be able to vote. this election is long time and coming. so to finally have it here and such a beautiful dashgs you are going to see a record turn out today. >> it's very issue oriented here. electing 9 congressman including a center but a lot of people say it's the ballot

questions that's driving this turn out here. question 6 and 7 are big. >> yes, they are. ballot questions 6 and 7 and also the presidential election. that's why you see the big turn out. thanking people for coming out. i have an interest in both the questions and make sure they vote yes on the questions for the democrats on that ballot we've given out. really thanking people for coming out, standing in long lines and doing the constitutional duty. >> a lot of people say maryland is often overlooked. but with some of the questions that marylanders are voting on, do you thnk there could be some national implications that come from what marylanders decide? >> i certainly do. we have the dream act that's on the ballot in maryland which says that any child whose family pays taxes in maryland should be able if their child graduates and gets into a maryland college to pay in state ratz. the maryland dream act is very important. and we will be

the first state likely in the country ever to go to the polls to affirm the freedom of religion but equal rights in the context of civil marriage. and that would be historic. whenever we're given a choice of moving forward or going back always move forward when it comes to extending equal rights to all of our citizens. >> and question 7, the gambling question expanding that is big. both sides have spent more than $86 million trying to sway voters. where do you think it's going to stand come tomorrow morning? >> we're going to pass question 7. about revenues staying in the state of maryland and prince georges county. $550 million leave the state of maryland and go to other places. it's going to stay here. the governor's done a great job to make sure the money goes to the education trust fund. we're going to be successful in all the ballot initiatives. >>and while we're talking about the state of maryland, you were talking about the state of virginia before we went on the

air here. and taking some credit for work you all have done in the state of virginia. >> i'm so proud of the marylanders moms and dads, grandparents and aunts and uncles that i've seen throughout our state. over the weekend we sent over 1100 volunteers to knock on doors with our neighbors. so the virginia polls closed at 7:00 p.m. and marylanders have been there shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors to move our country forward. and i'm so proud of the effort that's been put forward. >> did i hear you correctly that if obama wins, it will done because of the work done here? >> the number of people we've sent over to virginia and the calls that were made, i made a couple calls ourself right here in prince georges county. we know we worked hard and thank everybody who not only made calls but also went out there and knocked on doors.

the viewers this morning? >> we're seeing a very enthusiastic turn out here in the district. what i'd like to say is bring your patience. dress warm. we are seeing long lines. we aren't having any malfunctions of any of our touch screens or m 100s. and we're just seeing long lines. >> anything to be learned mr. tatum from early voting? any issues out of that? how can you say that your vote will also be put into this big pile when we elect our next president? >> certainly. as those folks who voted in early voting had experienced, once they arrive at the touch screen or vote the paper ballots, the votes are tabulated therein stan . the most important thing is for them to be patient as they are standing

in line. we're seeing record turn out here and we saw that from the early voting process self. been a number of folks who have asked about the number of machines we have at our polling places and we allocated our machines on the historical turn out. we have paper ballots for every voter that turns out as well as the touch screen which is there for citizens with disabilities so they can vote unassisted if they've liked to do so. understanding and there's going to be lines because everyone's enthusiastic to come out here. >> on that ballot, it's a two sided ballot. that's how it presents on the web site. how do you make sure that voters know to flip that paper? there's extremely important issues on the backside of that ballot. >> so in training our poll workers, we've instructed them to show the voter there's a double side to the ballot.

our election day coverage continues right now with spotlight on ohio and its 18 electoral votes. early voting started in early october. and i guess you could say it never ended cause it could -- you can still cast votes in ohio until yesterday at 2:00 p.m. you could still cast votes. then the polls open up this morning at 6:30. ballots cast before today have been scanned in but won't be counted until the polls close in ohio at 7:30 tonight. the virginia board of elections says the number of absentee voters increased. >> but the number of registered voters decreased. so will this affect the voting in virginia? live in fairfax county now. how are the polls holding up there so far? >> reporter: so far so good. ever since this morning , 5:30

this morning, a steady pace. people waiting in line patient tee and happily to cast their votes. interesting you mention that about the registered voters. people are trying to see which way virginia which is a purple state is going to go. 13 electoral votes. but as we know, there's a hot less contested senate race here as well between two former governors. they are battling for jim web's seat. kaine was polling well in october but narrowed significantly. showing kaine with a less than 2 point lead. results here could be an early indicator of how the night is going to go. everyone is going to be watching that closely. doing very well. the wait reported to be about 30 minutes. it's well organized and going smoothly.

one woman who is especially proud to be voting today. >> i'm feeling great. as a matter of fact i'm a first time voter. you can't imagine how empowered i feel. i have voted in my own country but just became a citizen this year. but i'm excited. >> you are going to make me cry. >> it really is very emotional for me. >> and we've had a lot of people feeling that regardless of which way they are voting today. they all feel proud to be able to play a part in the democratic process. and that is overall message here. this is something that we do as americans and everybody wants to come out here on election day and do it in virginia. back to you. >> thank you. >> i love election day. i really do. >> energizing . >> yeah. it is. now, along with cleaning up and staying warm, people in the northeast hit hard are trying to figure out how to vote. >> state officials are trying

to make that happen. and sara is back now with more on that. definitely a hardship when you don't have a warm place to live to try to make it out to vote today. >> a lot of people in new york and new jersey are in that situation. a lot of them just try to go stay warm and get the power back on. voting may be the last thing on their minds. trying to make it easy to get out there and vote. here is what they are doing. they are driving hurricane victims to their polling sites. and distributing mail in ballots. in counties declared emergency zones, voters can fill out an affidavit ballot. authorized messengers are carrying mail in votes. comes the push to get the power back on to people in northeast. another storm is moving in and expected to hit the area tomorrow. more than 1 million homes and businesses still remain without power.

officials say most polling sites in both states have power and are up and running. we're seeing the worst of the worst right now that the fact any polling places would be closed down due to the storm is a big concern. a lot of people that would normally go there. trying to do the best to make sure people get out and vote. >> thanks, sara. >> at least one person was killed during explosion in north carolina. coming up, we have an update. >> plus, the search for a suspect. police need your help identifying the people in this surveillance video. what they are accused of, next. 

making headlines around the world, officials say 27 people are dead. 19 soldiers among them after a car explosion near baghdad. 40 other people were hurt. exploded near a military

base as troops were changing shifts. in north carolina, an investigation is underway after a deadly explosion this morning. one person was killed. three others hurt after the explosion at durham regional hospital. happened after 2:00 this morning on the hospital's 6th floor. some patients had to be relocated due to flooding from the sprinklers.. >> hope surveillance video can help solve a break in. two men and one woman who broke into a couple businesses two weeks ago. investigators say the suspects first tried to break in to one business but couldn't get inside. they tried and succeeded to break in to two businesses nearby. give them a call. >> 9:26 now and coming out with the early voting turn out may mean for this election and how the candidates mayfair in key battleground states. >> joins us live to go deeper

today with temperatures running 10 to 12 degrees below average for the first week of november. sunshine for the first part of your day. clouds move in later this afternoon. and into the nighttime hours, this is our storm system. not off the coast yet but will be later tonight. and pushes up the eastern sea board during the day tomorrow. i want to show you a couple different features. future cast. the thinking has changed a little in the past 24 hours. yesterday, we thought we were going to be impacted here in a great way. we're thinking it's going to be just far enough east that we'll be on the western edge. clouds starting to roll in. and during the day tomorrow, much of the day, that storm system stays just off shore. so if this forecast track verifies, we're not going to see a whole lot. clouds, maybe showers during the afternoon. and of course the worst will be off to our east and north. lower eastern show,

guaranteed to get rain. how far the west they track during the day tomorrow to see how much we're impacted here in washington. it will be out of here by thursday. let me mention again, this track is not solid here. it's been wobbling to the west and east. so we'll have to watch it care fally as we get into the overnight hours and during the day tomorrow. along the shore, this is not a good news scenario. winds gusting 40 to 60 miles per hour once again. already, a high wind watch east of the bay here for tomorrow. beach erosion coastal flooding a guarantee and heavy flooding. and right where the impacts for sandy are are worse. won't be as strong as sandy but looks like it's going to bring misery. all right. our forecast shg 48 today. winds north and east at 5 to 10. got to watch that

storm system carefully. we think the worst will track to our east. and nice warmup here for the weekend. veteran's day sunday. we observe it on monday. temperatures by monday for the holiday back in the mid 60s. that's a little better. that's a look at the forecast. back to you at the desk. >> thanks very much, tucker. it is estimated that a million people in maryland and the district of columbia voted before election day. and millions more are expected at the polls in this tight presidential race. joining us now with analysis is michael who reaches public policy at george mason university. also an author. republicans and the black vote came out. thanks for coming in. first of all we mentioned the early voting. does the number of people who have voted early particularly in this area suggest anything in

particular to you? >> there is a conventional wisdom that is beginning to develop that suggests the campaign that has the best ground game will likely see results in the early voting. over the course of the last few years you've seen the proportion of early voters increase 40% in some states. that has made it a bit more difficult to gauge in some of the more competitive states if both campaigns are relatively similar ground games. >> am i right in thinking that traditionally when we thought about early voters? we thought about voters who were very energized to change whatever party was in power. is that still the case or not necessarily so? >> what you are more likely to see are energized voters and senior voters. in many cases they will have more time to go out and vote. and those who are traveling for business or whatever reason, they can vote early and travel and not worry

about rushing back. >> you mentioned the ground game. it's interesting. this is not something the media focuses a lot on leading up to an election. i've been reading articles that talk about how well organized the obama ground game is in some ways more organized than it was in 2008. and how more organized the republican ground game this time around and how they learned lessonsment how important are those ground games going to be? >> absolutely critical. generally has a better structure in place because they've done it before. the republican nominee in this case, governor romney is building on what happened in 2008. 2008 wasn't successful for the party. but he has been running for president for a very long time and has had an tount build his ground game overtime. and so for that reason and given the enormous amount of money that both candidates have. neither campaign can say we

really didn't have the resources we needed to build the structure. >> earlier we talked to lenny from american university. and we were talking about the battleground states. and he was saying that virginia, we know it's a battleground state. but he thinks virginia in some ways may be the key state. how do you view that? >> here's what i'm going to be looking for at about 8:00, what happened in arlington, fairfax and prince william? did the president over perform his numbers from 2008? did governor romney over perform or under perform from 2008? those numbers will tell a lot about what goes on in the rest of the state. president obama won those three counties in 2008 and split the rest of the state with senator mccain. that's one of the things you want to look for. and particularly ohio and florida. you also have very small county regional areas you

can look at and say this might determine what's going to happen in the rest of the state. >> you're a professor of public policy and analyze these types of things quite a bit. super packs. they have really made a difference in this election in terms of the money available, the ads that we see. has that been to the advantage of the voter or not? >> if by advantage you mean getting a chance to see more negative ads, yes it is. there was a great concern among democrats that the citizens united decision will result in an uneven playing field. at least in this election that has not proven to be the case. raised enormous amounts of money. both campaigns have raised over a billion dollars each to run the election. so we don't have to worry about it in terms of the overall playing field. but i do have a

question about the extent to which it drowns out other candidates and ideas that can't get the support. >> very interesting. mike fauntroy. i'm sure we'll be talking to you again. thanks for coming in. 9:39 now. we'll be right back .

and she is live with us once again. how has that voter turn out been? i know it was a pretty steady stream. >> reporter: looks good. the entire parking lot here is full and pretty much been that way since we got here at 5:30. you mentioned those absentee numbers. one of the things analysts are going to be looking at. voter registration is actually down from 2008 by almost 190,000 voters. that could be something significant. changes to the voter id law as well which perhaps people will be looking at and seeing whether that might have any impact. and as we know, a big battleground state. it is one of the first battleground states to have the polls open. one of the first states where the polls will close. close around 7:00 tonight. early indicator of how the night will go. turn out has been good. the wait reported to be about 30 minutes. not too

long. people telling us it's organized and going smoothly. another big race here in virginia. democrat kaine and allen are in a tight rain. lead was good in october has narrowed significantly. the most recent polls showing kiane with less than 2 point lead. they are going to go around the state and try to do campaigning. allen in mount virginia and kiaine in virginia. >> i'm optimistic that virginians will stand strong for freedom and opportunity for all. >> going to do all we can to encourage people to turn out today. it's been a long campaign. and kind of feel good about the race we've won and the vision we've laid out. now it's in the voters hands. i feel good to be here on election day. >> have you been surprised

virginia has been a close contest this year? >> not really. i feel like we've worked our way. >> two questions people have to talk about. one will be on eminent domain and putting tougher penalties on the state. there's also a question to move the general assemblies. their veto session if they need to do so. i mentioned earlier, voter id. that could come into play this year if the race is very close this year. if it comes down to provisional ballots. could be a difference maker. this year if you did not have one of the forms of valid id, have to cast a provisional ballot and not be counted until friday when they have to come back to the election officials and validate that vote. if it comes down to the provisional ballots, could be interesting here in virginia. >> all right. thank you very much. >> polls in maryland stay open until 8:00 tonight.

>> couple of hot button ballot questions appear to be helping bring out the vote in maryland. live at a polling station in largo with more. >> reporter: good morning to you. this has been a busy place since 5:30 this morning. both governor omalley was here and baker doing last minute stumping. you can see there still is a line. and on average, it's taking people about 45 minutes to an hour to get through. there are several key questions on the ballot but two that are really hot button topics a lot of voters are talking about. question 6 and 7. question 6 legalizes gay marriage. question 7 would expand gambling and build a new casino here in prince georges county. both governor and the executive were strongly for 6 and 7. but everyone is not. and in a small sampling we did in talking to voters, we found if someone was against question 6, they were also against 7.

>> i'm not into redefining marriage. i believe it's between a man and a woman. civil unions is okay but going beyond that is a little much for me. >> i believe same sex marriage wasn't in the word and i don't believe it should be anything that's legalized. >> i'm not against it but i'm not for it. >> it would be good if the money did stay in the state but i am morally against gambling. i'm torn between the two and say i'm against gambling so i don't want an is a casino in my state. >> money never goes where it's supposed to government it's always branched out to somewhere else. the schools may get some of that money. they are not going to get the full amount the reason they are going to have. they want it to pass. >> i think it will bring more trouble. gambling is more
